Description

The Finance Ministry of India has recently approved the establishment of Maitri II, the country’s latest research station in eastern Antarctica. This strategic initiative marks India’s continued commitment to polar research and scientific exploration in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.

About Maitri II Research Station

Maitri II is envisioned as a larger and more advanced counterpart to the existing Maitri I station, incorporating modern, eco-friendly technologies. The new station is being designed as a green research base, leveraging renewable energy to minimize environmental impact.

Key Features:

  • Renewable Energy Integration: The station will rely on solar power during summer months and wind energy to harness Antarctica’s strong winds, ensuring sustainable operations even in harsh conditions.

  • Automated Monitoring Systems: Maitri II will be equipped with automated scientific instruments capable of recording environmental and climate data continuously. These systems will relay information to research centers in mainland India, even if the station remains unstaffed for extended periods.

  • Construction Timeline: The station is planned for completion by January 2029, making it one of the most modern research facilities in the region.

The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), will act as the nodal agency, overseeing the operation, logistics, and scientific missions for Maitri II, as well as coordinating India’s broader polar research initiatives in both Antarctica and the Arctic.

About Existing Indian Research Stations In Antarctica

India has a long history of polar exploration, operating multiple research stations to study the Antarctic environment:

Maitri I Station:

  • Established in 1989, it is situated in the Schirmacher Oasis, a 20 km-long ice-free area in East Antarctica.

  • The station includes a main building, fuel farm, fuel station, lake water pump house, summer camp, and several smaller modular units.

  • Accommodation capacity ranges from 25 to 40 scientists, depending on the mission and season.

Bharati Station:

  • Operational since 2012, Bharati is located in Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica.

  • It serves as a key hub for multidisciplinary research including climate studies, oceanography, glaciology, and atmospheric science.

Dakshin Gangotri:

  • India’s first Antarctic base, it was functional for several years and laid the foundation for the country’s polar research program.

The approval of Maitri II reflects India’s commitment to cutting-edge scientific research, sustainable exploration practices, and long-term presence in Antarctica. The new station will enable Indian scientists to expand research on climate change, polar ecosystems, atmospheric studies, and geophysical phenomena in one of the planet’s most sensitive and extreme regions.
