On the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2025, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare inaugurated a series of enhanced initiatives under the National Tele Mental Health Programme (Tele MANAS). These steps aim to expand access to mental health services across India and strengthen the country’s digital mental health infrastructure.
About Tele MANAS
Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele MANAS) is a pioneering tele-mental health service launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2022. The programme is part of the broader National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) and seeks to provide universal, affordable, and high-quality mental health care to citizens, irrespective of their location.
The service is available across all Indian States and Union Territories, ensuring that mental health support is accessible even in remote and underserved regions. Tele MANAS combines tele-counselling, consultation, and specialist support to create a seamless continuum of care.
Structure Of Tele MANAS
Tele MANAS operates on a two-tier system designed to optimize care delivery and enhance the quality of mental health services:
Tier 1: State Tele MANAS cells are staffed with trained counsellors and mental health professionals who provide immediate support. Services include:
Tele-Counselling: One-on-one mental health support for individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, or other psychological issues.
Tele-Consultation: Remote guidance and intervention for individuals requiring expert mental health advice.
Tier 2: Involves specialists from the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) and medical colleges, offering additional consultation services. These experts provide:
Physical consultations at designated centres
Audio-visual consultations through the e-Sanjeevani platform, integrating digital tools with traditional care methods.
Mobile App And Digital Services
To increase accessibility, Tele MANAS has launched a dedicated mobile application and enhanced video consultation features. The app serves as a comprehensive mental health platform, providing:
Self-help resources for stress management and emotional well-being
Guidance to recognize early signs of mental distress
Tools and strategies for coping with anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions
Key features of the app include:
Multi-lingual user interface for ease of use across regions
AI-powered Chatbot “Asmi” for instant guidance
Accessibility features for differently-abled users
Emergency Module for urgent mental health interventions
The app will now be available in 10 regional languages, in addition to Hindi and English, covering:
Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Odia, and Punjabi.
