NITI Aayog has launched a groundbreaking national strategy titled “AI for Inclusive Societal Development”, aimed at empowering India’s 490 million informal workers. Unlike most global AI initiatives that focus on formal sectors and white-collar jobs, this roadmap targets the informal workforce, which contributes nearly 50% of India’s GDP but often lacks access to social protection and productivity-enhancing tools.

The roadmap stresses urgent coordinated action to prevent further marginalisation of this sector.
