Description
The International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), in collaboration with Gautam Buddha University, organized the International Abhidhamma Day 2025 celebrations on October 6–7, 2025, at Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida. Supported by the Ministry of Culture and various Buddhist organizations, the event focused on the theme “The Relevance of Abhidhamma in Buddhist Thought – Text, Tradition, and Contemporary Perspectives.” It brought together scholars and practitioners from India and across Asia to explore the philosophical, ethical, and modern-day significance of Abhidhamma teachings.
Significance Of International Abhidhamma Day
International Abhidhamma Day commemorates the occasion when Lord Buddha taught the Abhidhamma to the deities in Tavatimsa Heaven and later shared the same knowledge with his foremost disciple, Sariputta. Celebrated annually on the full moon day of Sharada Purnima, this observance honors the profound doctrinal and ethical insights contained in the Abhidhamma Pitaka, one of the three divisions of the Buddhist canon (Tipitaka). The day symbolizes the enduring spiritual depth of Buddhist philosophy and its continued influence on human understanding and morality.
Conference Themes And Key Discussions
The two-day academic conference featured over 35 research papers that examined the philosophical, psychological, and ethical dimensions of the Abhidhamma. Scholars explored how ancient Buddhist teachings resonate with modern disciplines such as cognitive science, psychology, artificial intelligence, and neuroscience. The discussions emphasized the Abhidhamma’s relevance in addressing contemporary challenges related to mental health, mindfulness, and emotional well-being.
The event also fostered dialogue on how Abhidhamma philosophy can bridge ancient wisdom with modern scientific inquiry, offering insights into human consciousness and ethical living.
Keynote Speakers And Dignitaries
Renowned Pali and Sanskrit scholar Dr. Uma Shankar Vyas delivered a keynote address tracing the historical evolution of the Abhidhamma, describing it as a form of “higher enlightenment.”
Prof. Rana Pratap Singh emphasized that Buddha’s teachings continue to serve as guiding principles for both personal development and societal harmony.
The Chief Guest, the 3rd Khenchen Rinpoche of the Drikung Kagyu lineage, highlighted the Abhidhamma’s practical role in overcoming ignorance, mental defilements, and emotional distress.
IBC Director General Shri Abhijit Halder spoke about the Abhidhamma’s contribution to holistic health, inner balance, and global peacebuilding.
Exhibitions And Cultural Showcases
The celebrations also featured a rich display of over 2,500 Buddhist-themed stamps from 90 different countries, curated by philatelist Vinod Kumar. Two special exhibitions “Buddha Dhamma on Body and Mind” and one featuring artifacts from the Piprahwa relics offered visitors a glimpse into Buddhism’s historical and cultural legacy.
Two documentary films were screened, one exploring the spread of Buddha Dhamma across Asia and the other depicting the life and contributions of Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, an esteemed Buddhist monk and diplomat. These cultural programs complemented the scholarly sessions, highlighting Buddhism’s universal values and cross-cultural impact.
Recognition Of Pali As A Classical Language
The Government of India’s recognition of Pali as a Classical Language was a major highlight of the event. Pali, the canonical language of Theravada Buddhism and the primary medium of the Abhidhamma texts, holds immense linguistic and spiritual importance. This recognition not only safeguards ancient Buddhist literature but also promotes academic research, translation efforts, and international cultural exchange within Buddhist studies.
Conclusion
The 2025 International Abhidhamma Day celebrations reaffirmed India’s pivotal role in preserving and promoting Buddhist philosophy. By integrating traditional teachings with contemporary scholarship, the event highlighted how Abhidhamma continues to guide ethical, psychological, and spiritual understanding in the modern world.
