Description

Indian peacekeepers deployed under the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) have been recognised for their exemplary service in the conflict-sensitive Abyei region, situated between Sudan and South Sudan. During a ceremonial medal parade, Maj Gen Robert Yaw Affram, Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNISFA, commended the Indian Battalion (INDBATT) for their professionalism, courage, and dedication. The honour reflects India’s consistent leadership and commitment to global peacekeeping efforts under the United Nations.

Role And Achievements Of Indian Contingent

India has remained one of the strongest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, providing not only troops but also strategic expertise, logistical assistance, and humanitarian support.
In Abyei, Indian peacekeepers play a pivotal role in maintaining peace and stability in the region, which continues to be disputed between Sudan and South Sudan. The INDBATT contingent comprises military observers, officers, and frontline personnel who undertake a range of operations including area patrolling, civilian protection, and ensuring the security of humanitarian missions. Their efforts have been vital in supporting UNISFA’s mandate of sustaining peace and facilitating humanitarian access.

India’s Enduring Commitment To Peacekeeping

India’s engagement in UN peacekeeping began in the 1950s, and since then, the nation has deployed more than 2.9 lakh personnel across over 50 missions worldwide. Currently, India is among the largest contributors to peacekeeping forces, with more than 5,000 troops serving in nine out of eleven active UN missions.
Over the decades, 180 Indian soldiers have laid down their lives in the service of global peace a testament to India’s dedication and sacrifice. The country’s peacekeeping philosophy is deeply rooted in its foreign policy values of non-alignment, global cooperation, and respect for sovereignty.

India has also been a strong advocate for gender equality in peace operations, having deployed several women officers and all-female contingents in various missions. These initiatives underscore India’s leadership in promoting inclusivity and empowerment within international peacekeeping structures.
