Description

In celebration of Wildlife Week, Delhi’s Forest and Wildlife Department has announced a series of six consecutive days of bird walks at the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary. The initiative aims to engage the public with nature, raise awareness about local biodiversity, and promote conservation efforts in one of Delhi’s most ecologically significant areas.

About Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary

Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary spans approximately 32.71 square kilometers along the Southern Delhi Ridge of the Aravalli hill range, straddling the Delhi-Haryana border. The sanctuary extends across Southern Delhi and the northern districts of Faridabad and Gurugram in Haryana, forming a crucial ecological link between urban areas and natural landscapes.

It holds high biodiversity significance as it merges the hilly terrain of the Southern Ridge with the Indo-Gangetic Plain, creating a unique habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. Additionally, Asola Bhatti is a key section of the North Aravalli Leopard Wildlife Corridor, which stretches from Sariska National Park in Rajasthan, traverses multiple districts of Haryana, and finally connects to the Delhi Ridge, facilitating the movement of leopards and other wildlife.

Vegetation And Flora

The sanctuary’s vegetation is classified under the Northern Tropical Thorn Forests according to Champion & Seth (1968). The plants here are xerophytic, adapted to survive in dry conditions with features such as thorny branches, wax-coated leaves, succulent tissues, and hairy (tomentose) foliage.

Prominent tree species found in the sanctuary include Neem, Peepal, and Jamun, which provide both food and shelter for local wildlife. Asola Bhatti is also noted for its extensive collection of medicinal plants, reflecting its importance as a repository of traditional and herbal flora.

Fauna

The sanctuary supports a wide array of wildlife. Mammals commonly found include Nilgai (Blue Bull), Indian Porcupine, Indian Hare, and Indian Grey Mongoose, while the area’s rich avian diversity is a major highlight. Over 200 bird species inhabit or visit the sanctuary, including iconic birds such as the Indian Peafowl, Red Junglefowl, and Indian Grey Hornbill, making it a haven for birdwatchers and researchers alike.

Significance Of Bird Walks

The daily bird walks organized during Wildlife Week offer an opportunity for participants to observe and learn about the sanctuary’s diverse birdlife, understand the interdependence of species within this ecosystem, and develop a deeper appreciation for urban wildlife conservation. Such initiatives help strengthen the connection between citizens and nature while encouraging responsible environmental stewardship in rapidly urbanizing regions.

By combining recreation with education, the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary continues to play a pivotal role in conservation awareness, wildlife protection, and maintaining ecological balance in the Delhi-NCR region.
