About Ortolan Bunting

The Ortolan Bunting is a small migratory songbird belonging to the genus Emberiza, with the scientific name Emberiza hortulana. It is native to the Palearctic region, primarily Europe, but its range extends eastward to Mongolia and northward close to the Arctic Circle.

Habitat And Distribution

Ortolan Buntings prefer open landscapes, including both cultivated fields and uncultivated lands with sparse woody vegetation. They are typically found at altitudes of up to 2,500 meters in certain regions. Unlike many birds, they avoid forested areas entirely, even during migration, and are not adapted to oceanic climates, which makes coastal or heavily humid regions unsuitable for them.

Physical Characteristics

The species exhibits noticeable sexual dimorphism:

• Males: Characterized by a greenish-gray head, a yellow throat, a distinctive swooping mustache, and a ring around the eye. Their back, rump, and belly are brown with streaks, making them well-camouflaged in open fields.

• Females and Juveniles: Smaller in size, with spotted bellies and overall duller plumage, helping them blend into their surroundings during nesting or migration.

Like other buntings, the Ortolan possesses a conical beak, specifically adapted for cracking seeds, which forms a major part of its diet.

Despite its rarity in regions like Bengal, the Ortolan Bunting is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with stable populations across much of its European and Asian range.
