The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has approved Rupees 82 lakh for the Andhra Pradesh Biodiversity Board to support the conservation of the endemic tree species Red Sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus). This initiative aims to protect one of India’s most valuable and endangered plant species.

• Native Region: Found mainly in the Southern Eastern Ghats, particularly in the districts of Anantapur, Chittoor, Kadapa, and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh.

• Threats: Overexploitation due to high commercial demand has led to smuggling and illegal trade, posing serious risks to its survival.
