Description

India made a significant stride in maritime education in 2025 with the inauguration of the country’s first Maritime Simulation Centre. The facility, located at AMET Knowledge Park near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is a product of a strategic collaboration between the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) and global shipping leader A.P. Moller – Maersk. The centre integrates cutting-edge technologies to provide practical, hands-on training for aspiring seafarers, preparing them to meet international standards in the maritime industry.

Advanced Maritime Training Facilities

The Maritime Simulation Centre is equipped with Full Mission Simulators for both deck and engine operations. It also features Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) and advanced Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) labs. These technologies replicate real-world maritime conditions, enabling cadets to practice navigation, collision avoidance, watchkeeping, steering, and engine troubleshooting in a controlled environment before stepping onto actual ships.

Strategic Partnership Between AMET and Maersk

The centre was established through a joint initiative, leveraging AMET’s academic expertise and Maersk’s global industry experience. The project was backed by a funding of INR 13.5 Crore from the A.P. Moller Foundation. This partnership builds on over 25 years of collaboration aimed at advancing maritime education and professional development in India.

Enhancing Practical Competence For Shipping Industry

The facility addresses the critical gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills in maritime education. By providing cadets with simulated experiences of complex maritime operations, the centre ensures they are well-prepared for real-life sea voyages. This training enhances India’s ability to produce globally competent seafarers and strengthens the country’s position in the international shipping sector.

AMET’s Pioneering Role In Maritime Education

Founded in 1993, AMET is India’s first maritime university and a globally recognised institution in maritime education. The university offers a wide range of maritime and allied courses to over 4,000 students, supported by an alumni network of more than 27,000 professionals worldwide. AMET continues to play a leading role in maritime research and skill development, promoting industry-ready expertise among its graduates.

Maersk’s Commitment To Sustainable Maritime Talent

Maersk, a global leader in shipping and logistics, supports the centre as part of its broader initiatives in talent development and sustainability. The company has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 and actively invests in training infrastructure to nurture skilled maritime professionals capable of navigating a rapidly evolving industry landscape.

Future Impact On India’s Maritime Sector

The Maritime Simulation Centre is set to transform maritime training in India, producing highly skilled seafarers ready to tackle modern shipping challenges. By bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical operations, the centre will enhance India’s competitiveness in global maritime trade, strengthen the domestic shipping industry, and promote international standards in maritime education.
