Description

The Central University of Rajasthan (CUoR) has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable farming by successfully cultivating wheat in the arid landscapes of western Rajasthan. This success was made possible through an indigenous bioformulation-based soilification technology, which transforms barren desert sand into fertile, crop-supporting soil. The innovation holds the potential to curb the advance of the Thar Desert toward the National Capital Region (NCR) by turning wastelands into productive agricultural zones.

Desertification Challenges In Rajasthan

The Thar Desert has been expanding rapidly due to multiple environmental and anthropogenic factors:

  • Degradation of the Aravalli ranges, which traditionally acted as a barrier to desert expansion.

  • Erratic rainfall patterns linked to climate change.

  • Unscientific plantation drives, which disrupted native ecosystems instead of restoring them.

These issues have intensified land degradation, water scarcity, and agricultural distress, making the search for sustainable solutions increasingly urgent.

How Soilification Technology Works

The soilification process involves converting loose desert sand into soil-like material through the application of specialized polymers and bioformulations.

  • The bioformulation improves water retention capacity and binds sand particles.

  • It promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms, which enhance soil fertility.

  • This creates a microenvironment suitable for crop cultivation, even in harsh desert climates.

Wheat Farming Experiment In Banseli Village

In November 2024, CUoR scientists planted 13 kg of indigenous wheat-4079 seeds over a 1,000 sq. metre field in Banseli village, near Pushkar.

  • Irrigation needs were cut down to just three watering cycles for the entire crop cycle, compared to the usual five to six.

  • By April 2025, the experiment produced an average yield of 26 kg per 100 sq. metres.

  • The seed-to-harvest ratio reached 1:20, nearly double the yield typically achieved in arid farming conditions.

This demonstrated that desert land, once considered unfit for cultivation, could be transformed into a viable agricultural resource.

Institutional Support And Collaboration

The project received strong support from:

  • Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK): Assisted in designing the experimental field layout and provided expertise in scaling the trials.

  • Rajasthan State Horticulture Department: Helped in extending the project’s practical applications.

This collaboration showcased how academic research, field expertise, and government support can come together to deliver tangible benefits for farmers.

Expansion To Other Crops

Beyond wheat, CUoR has experimented with crops like bajra (pearl millet), guar gum, and chickpea. Trials conducted on campus using polymer-amended sand showed yields 54% higher compared to untreated sand.

  • The university now aims to extend the technology to other dryland crops such as millet and green gram, ensuring broader adoption in arid regions of Rajasthan and beyond.

Water Efficiency And Climate Significance

One of the most critical outcomes of this innovation is reduced irrigation requirements. By lowering water cycles from five or six to just three or four, the technology:

  • Conserves scarce water resources in desert regions.

  • Reduces the risk of crop failure during droughts.

  • Enhances the climate resilience of desert agriculture.

Conclusion

The success of CUoR’s soilification project is more than a scientific achievement—it is a transformative step toward sustainable desert agriculture. By enabling food production in water-scarce zones, it strengthens food security, rural livelihoods, and environmental resilience. If scaled effectively, this model could be replicated across arid regions of India and globally, offering a powerful solution against desertification and climate change.
