Description

Traditional medicine continues to play a crucial role in healthcare worldwide in 2025. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 88% of member states integrate traditional medicine into their health systems. For billions of people, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, it serves as the primary healthcare option, offering affordability and accessibility. Beyond treatment, traditional medicine also supports biodiversity, nutrition, and livelihoods. The global market is thriving, projected to reach $583 billion with annual growth rates between 10% and 20%. Countries like China, Australia, and India are leading sectors, reflecting a global shift toward preventive health care.

Global Traditional Medicine Landscape

Out of 194 WHO member countries, 170 practice traditional medicine. Its widespread use is driven by cultural familiarity and cost-effectiveness. Market valuations highlight increasing trust and demand:

  • China: Traditional Chinese Medicine sector valued at $122.4 billion

  • Australia: Herbal medicine industry worth $3.97 billion

  • India: AYUSH sector valued at $43.4 billion

This growth indicates a move away from purely reactive treatments toward preventive and holistic health strategies.

India’s AYUSH Sector: Rapid Growth And Global Reach

India’s AYUSH industry has expanded nearly eight-fold in under a decade, encompassing over 92,000 MSMEs. Key statistics include:

  • Manufacturing revenues: Rs 21,697 crore (2014-15) - Rs 1.37 lakh crore (2024-25)

  • Services sector earnings: Rs 1.67 lakh crore

  • Exports: $1.54 billion in AYUSH and herbal products to over 150 countries

Ayurveda, in particular, has gained formal recognition internationally. Awareness is high domestically, with 95% of rural and 96% of urban populations familiar with AYUSH systems. Over half of the population has used these therapies recently, favoring Ayurveda for rejuvenation and disease prevention.

Scientific Research And International Collaboration

India invests extensively in AYUSH research, including clinical trials, drug standardisation, and integrative care models. The Ministry of AYUSH promotes global cooperation through 25 bilateral agreements and 52 partnerships, while 43 AYUSH Information Cells operate in 39 countries. Additionally, 15 academic chairs exist in foreign universities.

The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in India works to integrate traditional knowledge with modern science. Advanced technologies like AI and big data are increasingly employed to validate treatments and predict outcomes.

Ayurveda’s Holistic Philosophy And Modern Relevance

Ayurveda emphasizes balance between mind and body, humans and nature, and consumption and conservation. Its principles address lifestyle diseases and environmental challenges, extending care to veterinary and plant health.

The 2025 theme, “Ayurveda for People & Planet”, underlines this holistic vision. Ayurveda Day, celebrated on 23 September, highlights the system as a global wellness movement, bridging ancient wisdom with modern health needs to provide affordable, inclusive, and sustainable care.
