To revive the long-pending Upper Krishna Project (UKP) Phase III, the Karnataka Cabinet has recently approved the acquisition of 1,33,867 acres of land. This move aims to enable the raising of the Almatti Dam’s height from its current 519.16 metres to 524.256 metres, thereby enhancing its water storage capacity and expanding irrigation benefits to drought-prone regions of North Karnataka.
About Almatti Dam
The Almatti Dam is a major hydroelectric and irrigation project constructed on the Krishna River in Bagalkot district, North Karnataka. It plays a crucial role in the Upper Krishna Irrigation Project (UKP), providing water for agriculture, drinking purposes, power generation, and flood management.
Construction and Commissioning: The dam was completed in July 2005, marking a significant milestone in Karnataka’s irrigation development.
Key Objectives:
Ensuring irrigation supply to arid and semi-arid regions.
Providing potable water to nearby districts.
Generating hydroelectricity to meet regional energy demands.
Controlling flood risks during heavy monsoon flows.
Storage and Capacity:
Current gross storage capacity: 123.08 TMC at 519 metres MSL.
Proposed increase in dam height will further boost water retention.
Hydroelectric Power Generation:
Total annual electricity output: 713 million kilowatt-hours (kWh).
Installed capacity: 290 MW.
The powerhouse is located on the right bank, equipped with vertical Kaplan turbines (five units of 55 MW each and one unit of 15 MW).
Power is generated at two separate stations – Almatti I and Almatti II Powerhouses.
Water Utilisation:
After generating electricity, water is released downstream into the Narayanpur Reservoir, ensuring continued irrigation support across agricultural belts.
Tourism and Green Development:
The dam is surrounded by 77 acres of landscaped gardens, including the Japanese Garden, Rock Garden, Mughal Garden, Gopal Krishna Garden, and Lavakush Garden, making it not just an engineering marvel but also a tourist attraction.
Importance Of Project
The expansion of Almatti Dam under UKP Phase III is expected to:
Provide irrigation to lakhs of additional hectares of farmland.
Improve water security in drought-prone districts of North Karnataka.
Strengthen power generation capacity and stabilize the state’s energy supply.
Support rural livelihoods, boost agricultural productivity, and reduce migration from dry zones.
The project, once executed, will significantly enhance Karnataka’s irrigation infrastructure and contribute to its long-term goal of ensuring sustainable water and energy management.
