Description
On 15 September 2025, Acharya Devvrat, the current Governor of Gujarat, officially took oath as Governor of Maharashtra during a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan, Mumbai. The oath was administered by Bombay High Court Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar. This appointment follows the vacancy created by C.P. Radhakrishnan, who was recently elected as India’s 15th Vice-President. Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu had assigned Devvrat to temporarily discharge the duties of Maharashtra Governor in addition to his responsibilities in Gujarat.
About Acharya Devvrat
Acharya Devvrat is a veteran educator and former Gurukul principal with a strong focus on education, Ayurveda, and natural farming. He has served as:
Governor of Gujarat since July 2019
Governor of Himachal Pradesh from 2015 to 2019
His appointment to Maharashtra adds to his existing gubernatorial duties, reflecting a common administrative practice in India where one governor may hold dual responsibilities when a state’s governorship becomes temporarily vacant.
Reason For Change
C.P. Radhakrishnan, who had been serving as Maharashtra’s Governor since February 2023, vacated the post after his election as Vice-President. To ensure constitutional continuity at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai, the Centre entrusted Acharya Devvrat with additional charge of Maharashtra. Such interim arrangements help maintain stability and governance during administrative transitions.
Constitutional And Political Context
Under Article 153 of the Indian Constitution, each state must have a Governor, but the same person may be assigned to govern two or more states. The President of India, acting on the advice of the Union Cabinet, can make such appointments. This practice has been applied in the past, such as assigning the Governor of Kerala additional charge of Tamil Nadu or overseeing Union Territories temporarily.
