About Ho Tribe

• Ethnic Identity:
  The Ho, also referred to as Kolha, belong to the Austroasiatic Munda ethnic group. In their native language, the term Ho, Hodoko, or Horo translates to “human.”

• Geographical Distribution:
  The tribe is predominantly concentrated in the Kolhan region of Jharkhand. They also have significant populations in Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar, with smaller communities in neighboring states.

• Belief System and Spiritual Practices:

  • Over 90% of the Ho community follows Sarnaism, an indigenous faith centered around the worship of nature and spirits.

  • Each village has a deuri (village priest) who performs religious rituals.

  • A deowa (spirit doctor) is responsible for offering sacrifices to local deities and ancestral spirits. These practices often take place in a sacred grove located outside the settlement, signifying the tribe’s deep ecological and cultural connection to forests.

• Language:
  The community speaks the Ho language, which belongs to the Austroasiatic family and shares close linguistic ties with Mundari.

• Occupation and Economy:
  Agriculture forms the backbone of the Ho economy, with most members working as farmers, landholders, or agricultural laborers. Many are also employed in mining activities in mineral-rich regions of Jharkhand.

• Social and Cultural Life:

  • Ho society gives women relatively higher status compared to several other tribal groups in India.

  • Each village has a community akhra (dancing ground), generally located beneath a large tree, which serves as a cultural hub for festivals, dances, and collective decision-making.

  • Traditional music features native instruments such as the dama (drum), dholak, dumeng (mandar), and the rutu (flute).

The Manki-Munda System Of Governance

• Village Leadership:
  Each Ho village is headed by a Munda, who is the traditional chief responsible for resolving social and political disputes. The role is generally hereditary and enjoys community recognition.

• Role of the Manki:
  Above the Munda is the Manki, who heads a cluster of villages known as a pidh (usually 8–15 villages). If a dispute cannot be resolved at the village level, it is taken to the Manki for judgment.

• Scope and Limitations:

  • The Manki-Munda system was primarily designed for conflict resolution, community cohesion, and internal self-regulation.

  • The leaders under this system did not exercise authority over land or revenue matters.

  • Importantly, this structure functioned independently of outside sovereign powers and did not involve tax collection, symbolizing a self-sustaining, community-led governance framework.

The current protests underline the Ho tribe’s insistence on preserving their autonomous governance traditions against perceived external impositions. For the community, the Manki-Munda system is not only a mechanism of self-rule but also a cornerstone of their cultural identity, social solidarity, and resistance to assimilation pressures.
