Description

The government has recently declared 8.6 acres of green cover at Cantonment Railway Colony in Bengaluru as a Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS). This is Bengaluru’s second officially recognized BHS, following the Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra (GKVK). The designation highlights the importance of preserving urban green spaces and maintaining the city’s ecological balance.

About Biodiversity Heritage Sites (BHS)

Biodiversity Heritage Sites (BHS) are ecologically rich areas that harbor significant biodiversity and play a crucial role in maintaining local ecosystems. These sites are conserved and managed in collaboration with local communities and authorities to ensure sustainable use while protecting their unique ecological features.

Key Characteristics Of BHS

Diverse Species:

  • Areas may host a rich variety of wild and domesticated species, including intra-specific variations.

High Endemism:

  • Many BHS contain species that are native to a specific region and not found elsewhere.

Rare and Threatened Species:

  • They provide habitat for rare, endangered, keystone, or evolutionarily significant species, contributing to the long-term survival of vulnerable biodiversity.

Wild Ancestors of Domestic Plants:

  • Some sites preserve the wild ancestors of cultivated species, which are vital for agricultural diversity and research.

Cultural and Historical Significance:

  • Certain BHS may include fossil beds, ancient trees, or other biological components with cultural, ethical, or aesthetic value, enhancing the link between biodiversity and human heritage.

Varied Ecosystems:

  • BHS can span terrestrial, aquatic, coastal, inland, or marine ecosystems, reflecting the richness of India’s natural heritage.

Legal Framework For Biodiversity Heritage Sites

  • Biological Diversity Act, 2002: Under Section 37, the State Government, in consultation with local bodies, can notify ecologically significant areas as BHS.

  • Management and Conservation Rules: State governments, in collaboration with the Central Government, may establish rules for the management, protection, and sustainable use of these sites.

  • Community Participation: The designation does not impose restrictions on the traditional practices or livelihoods of local communities, except those voluntarily agreed upon.

  • Economic Consideration: States may implement schemes to compensate or rehabilitate individuals or communities economically affected by BHS notification.

Purpose And Significance

The declaration of BHS aims to:

  • Enhance the quality of life for local communities through biodiversity conservation.

  • Protect unique ecosystems from urbanization and degradation.

  • Promote research and education about local flora and fauna.

  • Maintain ecological balance within urban and rural landscapes.

India’s First Biodiversity Heritage Site

India’s first BHS was the Nallur Tamarind Grove in Bengaluru, Karnataka, declared in 2007. Since then, several states have identified unique ecosystems as BHS to preserve biodiversity hotspots, traditional agricultural landscapes, sacred groves, and culturally significant ecological areas.

The addition of Cantonment Railway Colony to Bengaluru’s BHS list emphasizes the city’s growing recognition of urban biodiversity and the importance of protecting green spaces amid rapid urban development.
