Description
India has officially entered a new chapter in regional transit with Namo Bharat, the country’s fastest train, achieving a top operational speed of 160 km/h. Running on the Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), this high-speed corridor connects two major urban centers in under 60 minutes, revolutionizing commuting in northern India and setting a benchmark for future regional transit projects.
Namo Bharat: Redefining Speed And Efficiency
Previously, India’s fastest trains Gatimaan Express and Vande Bharat Express operated at 160 km/h. However, following a SEBI-imposed speed restriction in June 2024, these trains were limited to 130 km/h on most routes. Namo Bharat, by contrast, consistently maintains its 160 km/h speed on dedicated high-speed tracks, officially making it India’s fastest operational train.
This speed is made possible through state-of-the-art rail infrastructure and cutting-edge safety mechanisms, including Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Control (ATC), and Automatic Train Operations (ATO). These systems ensure both safety and efficiency, even at high velocities, while minimizing delays and enhancing passenger confidence.
Delhi–Meerut RRTS: A Corridor For Future
Currently, the operational section of the RRTS stretches 55 km from New Ashok Nagar (Delhi) to Meerut South (Uttar Pradesh). Once fully completed, the 82.15 km corridor will connect Sarai Kale Khan (Delhi) to Modipuram (Meerut), with 16 stations in total.
The trains operate at 15-minute intervals, running 36 six-car trainsets, designed in Hyderabad and manufactured at Alstom’s Savli facility in Gujarat. This domestic manufacturing initiative highlights India’s growing capabilities in high-speed rail engineering, while also creating employment and boosting local industry.
Despite multiple station stops, the corridor is designed for sub-one-hour travel, reflecting careful planning to optimize both speed and accessibility.
Beyond a Train: Namo Bharat’s Hybrid Transit Model
Unlike conventional trains, Namo Bharat offers reservation-free travel and flexible service, combining the speed of express trains with the frequency of metro systems. This hybrid model caters specifically to medium-distance intercity commuters, bridging the gap between long-distance rail and urban metro services.
Since the launch of its first 17-km Priority Section on 21 October 2023, Namo Bharat has already served over 1.5 crore passengers, demonstrating its popularity and the demand for high-speed regional travel in the Delhi-NCR corridor.
Integration With Meerut Metro: Multi-Modal Connectivity
A standout feature of the RRTS is its integration with the Meerut Metro, which shares part of the infrastructure. The 23-km metro line with 13 stations allows passengers to seamlessly transfer between local and high-speed regional services. This multi-modal connectivity reduces transit time, enhances urban mobility, and ensures a smooth commuter experience.
National And State-Level Partnership
The Namo Bharat project is a collaborative effort between the Government of India (50%) and the state governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan (12.5% each). It represents India’s first dedicated Regional Rapid Transit System, designed to alleviate road congestion, cut down urban pollution, and foster rapid urban-rural integration.
Plans are already underway for future corridors, including Delhi–Panipat and Delhi–Alwar, positioning Namo Bharat as the potential backbone of intercity mobility in northern India.
