Description

Indore, widely recognised as India’s cleanest city, has emerged as the leader in the Swachh Vayu Survekshan (SVS) 2025, an annual assessment of urban air quality management. Despite recording a slight increase in PM10 levels, the city demonstrated outstanding efforts in controlling pollution and implementing innovative air quality initiatives.

About Swachh Vayu Survekshan (SVS) 2025

Swachh Vayu Survekshan (SVS) is an annual survey conducted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). The programme aims to improve air quality across India’s urban centres by promoting healthy competition among cities and encouraging targeted pollution mitigation measures.

Key features of SVS 2025 include:

  • Assessment of 130 cities across the country, covering different population categories.

  • Evaluation based on eight parameters, including:

    • Road dust mitigation

    • Solid waste management

    • Vehicular and industrial emission control

    • Construction and demolition (C&D) waste management

    • Public awareness campaigns

    • Measurable improvements in particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) levels

  • Encouragement of data-driven, multi-tiered actions for air quality improvement.

  • Mumbai recorded the highest drop at 44%, followed by Kolkata (37%), Hyderabad (26%), Bengaluru (26%), Delhi (15%), and Chennai (12%).

  • Out of the total cities surveyed, 22 met the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) with annual average PM10 concentrations below 60 ?g/m³.

  • Among major metropolitan cities, Chennai was the only one to meet the acceptable limit, registering 58 ?g/m³ as the annual average.

Significance Of SVS 2025

The survey highlights the progress made by Indian cities in combating air pollution while also identifying areas requiring urgent attention. It underscores the effectiveness of measures like:
