Description

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, has unveiled the beta version of “Adi Vaani”, a cutting-edge AI-powered language translator aimed at bridging communication gaps between tribal and non-tribal communities. This initiative represents a significant step toward preserving India’s diverse tribal languages and promoting inclusivity in governance, education, and healthcare.

About Adi Vaani

Adi Vaani is designed as a foundation for a future large language model dedicated to tribal languages, making it India’s first AI-based translation tool specifically for indigenous languages. Developed under the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh initiative, the project aims to protect endangered tribal languages while enabling real-time communication across linguistic divides.

The platform integrates advanced Artificial Intelligence with community-driven methodologies to document, preserve, and promote tribal languages and cultural heritage. It combines modern AI technologies with the expertise of tribal communities to ensure the tool is both accurate and culturally sensitive.

Development And Collaboration

The development of Adi Vaani is led by a national consortium of premier institutions, with IIT Delhi at the helm, supported by BITS Pilani, IIIT Hyderabad, and IIIT Nava Raipur. The project also works closely with Tribal Research Institutes (TRIs) across Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Meghalaya. This collaborative approach ensures that linguistic data is collected, validated, and refined in consultation with native speakers and local experts.

Objectives Of Adi Vaani

The platform is designed to achieve multiple goals, including:

  • Enabling real-time translation of text and speech between Hindi/English and selected tribal languages.

  • Facilitating interactive language learning for students and early learners.

  • Digitally preserving oral traditions, folklore, and cultural narratives of tribal communities.

  • Enhancing digital literacy, healthcare communication, and civic participation among tribal populations.

  • Disseminating information about government schemes, public health advisories, and speeches by national leaders.

Supported Languages And Scope

In its beta phase, Adi Vaani supports:

  • Santali (Odisha)

  • Bhili (Madhya Pradesh)

  • Mundari (Jharkhand)

  • Gondi (Chhattisgarh)

The platform is expected to expand its reach to additional tribal languages in future iterations, making it a comprehensive solution for India’s linguistic diversity.

Features And Methodology

Adi Vaani employs advanced AI language models such as No Language Left Behind (NLLB) and IndicTrans2, optimized for low-resource languages. Its development involves a community-based approach, where TRIs, language experts, and local communities actively contribute to data collection, annotation, and iterative improvement of the models.

Key functionalities include:

  • Text-to-Text, Text-to-Speech, Speech-to-Text, and Speech-to-Speech translations.

  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to digitize tribal manuscripts, primers, and literature.

  • Bilingual dictionaries and curated repositories for learners and researchers.

  • Providing subtitles for government communications, including Prime Minister’s speeches, health advisories (e.g., awareness campaigns for Sickle Cell Disease), and information on government programs in tribal languages.

Significance Of Initiative

Adi Vaani represents a landmark step in preserving linguistic heritage while promoting social inclusion and empowerment. By facilitating access to education, healthcare, and civic information in native languages, the tool strengthens tribal communities’ participation in India’s socio-economic development. Additionally, it serves as a model for leveraging AI to protect minority languages worldwide, ensuring that technological advancement goes hand in hand with cultural preservation.
