From 25 to 28 August 2025, the Indian Army’s Spear Corps and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) carried out a large-scale joint firepower exercise named Achook Prahar in central Arunachal Pradesh. The drill tested combat readiness and operational coordination under simulated battlefield conditions, featuring integrated use of mortars, machine guns, rockets, and grenades. The exercise highlighted the forces’ ability to operate cohesively in high-altitude and challenging terrain.
Background
The ITBP was established in 1962, following the Sino-Indian War, to safeguard India’s border with Tibet. Initially part of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), it became an independent central armed police force under the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2004. Its motto, Shaurya-Dridhata-Karma Nishtha, translates to Valour, Determination, and Devotion to Duty. Specialised in mountain warfare, the ITBP secures a 3,488 km border with China at altitudes ranging from 9,000 to 18,750 feet.
Exercise Achook Prahar
The four-day exercise involved the SpearHead Division of the Indian Army and ITBP personnel. It focused on validating operational preparedness through realistic combat drills. Troops coordinated the use of mortars, machine guns, rockets, and grenades to assess accuracy, response time, and joint operational efficiency. The exercise demonstrated high interoperability, crucial for effective defence in Arunachal Pradesh’s rugged terrain.
Significance
Achook Prahar highlighted the seamless integration of firepower and tactical coordination between the Army and ITBP. Such exercises strengthen battlefield efficiency by improving communication, rapid decision-making, and joint response capabilities. This collaboration is particularly important for protecting sensitive border areas prone to frequent tensions.
Operational Challenges
Arunachal Pradesh presents harsh weather, difficult terrain, and limited infrastructure, making military operations challenging. Troops require training in mountain warfare, acclimatisation, and survival skills. The ITBP’s expertise in mountaineering and skiing complements the Army’s combat capabilities. Joint exercises help overcome logistical and operational hurdles unique to high-altitude conflict zones.
Role Of Central Armed Police Forces
As a Central Armed Police Force, the ITBP supports border security and internal law enforcement under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Such forces assist the Army during both peacetime and conflict, ensuring constant vigilance and conducting specialised operations. Their cooperation with the Army forms a comprehensive security framework along India’s frontiers.
