ZSI Discovers Two New Springtail Species in India

Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have recently identified two previously unknown species of Collembola, commonly known as springtails: Salina aurantiamaculata and Salina pseudomontana.

About New Species

• Salina aurantiamaculata is distinguished by its vibrant bright orange markings, a rare pigment pattern among related species.

• Salina pseudomontana closely resembles the existing Salina montana, making its identification particularly noteworthy.

• Both species are part of the “celebensis” group, which has a cosmopolitan distribution.

• The discovery marks the first record of a new Salina species in India since 1979, bringing the total number of Salina species in the country to 17.

Collembola are among the earliest land-dwelling hexapods, with a lineage spanning hundreds of millions of years. Though tiny and often overlooked, they play a critical role in ecosystems:
