Description
Located in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, Gorumara National Park was declared a national park in 1992 and spans approximately 79.45 square kilometers. Situated along the banks of the Murti and Raidak rivers in the Terai region of Dooars at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, the park is celebrated for its rich biodiversity.
The park’s vegetation includes:
Dense Sal forests featuring Teak, Rain Tree (Albizia lebbeck), and Silk Cotton (Bombax malabaricum)
Bamboo groves and Terai grasslands
Tropical riverine reeds and a variety of orchids
The fauna of Gorumara National Park is equally diverse, hosting Indian rhinoceroses, Asian elephants, Indian bison, leopards, sambar deer, barking deer, spotted deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species, including peafowl, red jungle fowl, and the Indian hornbill.
Greater One-Horned Rhino: Facts And Habitat
The Greater One-Horned Rhino, or Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), is the largest of the three Asian rhino species and, alongside the African white rhino, ranks among the largest rhinos globally.
Distribution and Habitat:
Found primarily in India and Nepal, especially along the Himalayan foothills
Historically, they roamed freely across floodplains and forests near the Brahmaputra, Ganges, and Indus rivers
Semi-aquatic in nature, they prefer swamps, riverbanks, forests, and areas rich in mineral licks
Physical Features:
Adult males weigh up to 2,200 kg (approximately 4,840 pounds)
Height ranges from 170–186 cm (67–73 inches) and length from 368–380 cm (145–150 inches)
Characterized by a single black horn (8–25 inches long) and thick, grey-brown skin folds resembling natural armor
Primarily solitary, except for females with calves; males maintain loosely defended territories
Diet consists mainly of grasses, supplemented with leaves, branches, fruits, and aquatic plants
Notable Populations:
Kaziranga National Park in Assam is home to the largest population of Indian rhinos, numbering 2,401 individuals
Conservation Status:
Classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List
Conservation efforts include habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, and breeding programs in national parks such as Gorumara
Recent Births And Conservation Impact
The recent birth of two one-horned rhinos at Gorumara National Park marks a significant milestone for wildlife conservation in West Bengal. These additions not only increase the population of this endangered species but also reflect the success of ongoing protection and breeding programs.
Authorities continue to monitor rhino habitats closely, ensuring access to safe grazing areas, water sources, and medical care for calves. Awareness programs and eco-tourism initiatives are also helping local communities understand the importance of preserving rhino populations.
The Future Of Rhino Conservation In India
India has emerged as a global leader in rhino conservation, with multiple parks participating in breeding and relocation programs. The focus remains on:
Strengthening anti-poaching operations
Expanding protected habitats and corridors for safe migration
Engaging local communities in wildlife protection
Promoting research and monitoring to enhance population management
The growth of one-horned rhinos at parks like Gorumara signifies a positive trend, but continued conservation efforts are crucial to prevent future threats and ensure the survival of this majestic species for generations to come.
