The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has recently launched Project Aarohan, a pioneering initiative aimed at supporting the educational aspirations of children belonging to toll plaza employees across the country. This nationwide program seeks to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder the academic progress and career prospects of students from economically weaker sections.
Objectives And Scope Of Project Aarohan
Project Aarohan is designed to create a holistic support system for children of toll plaza personnel deployed along India’s vast national highway network. The initiative primarily targets students from marginalized communities, including those belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), minority communities, and first-generation learners.
The program focuses on:
Financial Assistance: Providing scholarships to remove barriers to quality education.
Mentorship: Pairing students with trained mentors to guide them academically and professionally.
Skill Development Workshops: Equipping students with essential skills for career readiness, entrepreneurship, and higher education.
Career Guidance: Offering structured advice on higher education opportunities, competitive exams, and vocational pathways.
By combining financial support with mentorship and skill-building, Project Aarohan aims to create a conducive environment for students to thrive academically and professionally. The initiative particularly emphasizes the inclusion of girls from low-income households, ensuring gender equality in access to educational opportunities.
Implementation And Collaborations
The program is being implemented in partnership with SMEC Trust’s Bharat Cares, an organization renowned for its work in education and social development. Through this collaboration, Project Aarohan intends to ensure that the scholarships and mentoring reach students in a structured and transparent manner, maximizing the program’s impact.
Funding And Coverage
In its first phase, Project Aarohan has been allocated Rs. 1 crore for the financial year 2025–26, covering the period from July 2025 to March 2026. The initiative will benefit 500 students, ranging from Class 11 to final-year undergraduate programs, with each student receiving an annual scholarship of Rs. 12,000.
Additionally, to encourage higher studies, the project will provide 50 exceptional students pursuing postgraduate education or other advanced programs with scholarships of Rs. 50,000 each. This dual-level support ensures that both school and college-level students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds have access to quality education and career advancement opportunities.
