Description

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has achieved a landmark milestone by surpassing Rupees 15 lakh crore in cumulative Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) since its inception in 2016. This milestone not only underscores the platform’s growing adoption but also reflects India’s ongoing commitment to transparent, efficient, and inclusive public procurement. Over the past nine years, GeM has evolved into a comprehensive digital ecosystem, connecting government departments with a diverse seller base comprising Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), startups, women-led businesses, SC/ST enterprises, and Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

GeM’s Transformative Role In Public Procurement

A Platform Focused on Trust and Inclusivity

GeM was launched to simplify and digitize government procurement, making the process faster, more accountable, and cost-effective. The platform’s success today reflects widespread adoption across central ministries, state departments, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and autonomous bodies, alongside increased participation from non-traditional sellers.

According to Shri Mihir Kumar, CEO of GeM, achieving Rupees 15 lakh crore GMV is a “testimony to the trust of stakeholders” and validates the platform’s inclusive, innovation-driven, and transparent approach.

Key Features Driving GeM’s Growth

  • Transparent and Accountable Transactions

Every transaction on GeM is fully digitally tracked, ensuring complete accountability and enabling seamless audits.

  • Inclusivity in Procurement

GeM has opened government procurement opportunities to previously underserved groups, including:

    • Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs)

    • Startups

    • Women entrepreneurs

    • SC/ST-owned enterprises

    • Self-Help Groups (SHGs)

  • Simplified Processes for Sellers and Buyers

With user-friendly registration, cataloging, and order management tools, GeM has significantly lowered barriers to entry for small businesses.

  • Policy Integration and Technological Innovation

By combining digital technology with policy reforms, GeM aligns closely with Digital India and the broader Viksit Bharat (Developed India) vision, making government procurement more streamlined and future-ready.

Achievements And Socio-Economic Impact

  • Widening the Seller Base: Lakhs of sellers now have direct access to government buyers, reducing reliance on intermediaries.

  • Empowering Micro and Small Enterprises: MSEs constitute a significant share of orders fulfilled on GeM, promoting job creation and local entrepreneurship.

  • Cost Optimization for the Government: Transparent bidding and competitive pricing help reduce public expenditure.

  • Promoting Digital Governance: GeM exemplifies end-to-end digital service delivery, minimizing paperwork and enabling faster decision-making.

Looking Ahead: GeM’s Vision For Future

While crossing Rupees 15 lakh crore GMV is a landmark achievement, GeM continues to innovate and expand, with strategic goals including:

  • Deepening Inclusion: Integrating more underserved groups and rural sellers into the procurement ecosystem.

  • Fostering Innovation: Encouraging sellers to provide technology-driven and innovative solutions tailored to government requirements.

  • Enhancing Efficiency: Further simplifying workflows and user interfaces to create a seamless experience for buyers and sellers alike.

GeM is envisioned as a key driver of inclusive economic growth, supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and contributing to the realization of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. Its continued expansion is expected to empower businesses, optimize government spending, and set a global benchmark in digital public procurement.
