In August 2025, Nepal became a member of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), a global initiative spearheaded by India to conserve seven iconic big cat species. Nepal’s rich wildlife, including snow leopards, tigers, and common leopards, makes it a crucial partner in advancing international efforts to protect these species.

Background Of IBCA

The International Big Cat Alliance was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 April 2023 in Mysuru. Its mandate covers seven big cat species: tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma. The alliance includes over 90 countries, ranging from natural habitats (range countries) to supportive non-range nations, working collaboratively on conservation. The Union Cabinet approved the IBCA’s formal establishment in February 2024, with its headquarters located in India.
