The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has given its nod to rename Jalalabad town in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district as Parashurampuri. The decision was announced on August 20, 2025, by Union Minister Jitin Prasada, who also belongs to the region. This change fulfills a long-pending demand of local residents, backed by political and religious groups, who believe the town holds strong connections with Lord Parashuram.

The town is widely regarded as the mythological birthplace of Lord Parashuram, an important figure in Sanatan Dharma.
The renaming seeks to highlight the spiritual and cultural identity of the area while moving away from a name that many associate with historical domination or “ghulami.”
Government Approval And Next Steps
The Home Ministry has communicated the approval to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary. A gazette notification formalizing the decision is expected soon, after which the name Parashurampuri will be reflected in all official records, government documents, and signage.
