Description

Indian Railways has recently marked a series of breakthroughs in its journey toward sustainable transport, renewable energy integration, and modernization of its infrastructure. From pioneering removable solar panels to enhancing freight logistics and commissioning advanced electrification systems, these developments reflect the railway’s growing commitment to eco-friendly practices and efficiency-driven operations.

India First Removable Solar Panel System Installed At Varanasi

In a historic move, Indian Railways has commissioned the country’s first removable solar panel system between railway tracks. The installation has been carried out at Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi, demonstrating a new model for green energy innovation in railway operations.

  • Commissioning Date: August 19, 2025

  • Location: Banaras Locomotive Works, Varanasi

  • System Design: 70-metre stretch equipped with 28 solar panels

  • Capacity: 15 kWp

  • Key Feature: Removable solar panel design, ensuring easy maintenance without obstructing railway operations

This initiative is a landmark achievement in railway engineering, as the removable design allows smooth maintenance of tracks while continuing to generate renewable energy. The solar panels will help reduce carbon emissions, cut energy costs, and move Indian Railways closer to its long-term goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Strengthening Freight Operations: New Salt Logistics Route From Bhuj

Alongside green energy progress, Indian Railways has expanded its freight services with the launch of a new salt logistics corridor. On August 10, 2025, the first industrial salt-loaded rake was dispatched from Sanosara (Bhuj–Naliya section) to Dahej, opening a new commercial route for Gujarat’s salt industry.

  • Freight Type: Industrial Salt

  • Quantity Transported: 3,851.2 tonnes

  • Distance Covered: 673.57 km

  • Revenue Generated: Rs 31.69 lakh

  • Date of Loading: August 9, 2025

This development is expected to boost the regional industrial ecosystem by facilitating faster, cost-effective, and reliable transportation of bulk salt consignments. It also strengthens Indian Railways’ role as the backbone of India’s freight movement, reducing dependence on road transport and promoting sustainable logistics.

Electrification Breakthrough

In another technological leap, Indian Railways has successfully commissioned the country’s first 2×25 kV Electric Traction System at the Nagda–Khachrod section in Madhya Pradesh under the Ratlam Division of Western Railway.

This cutting-edge system is designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce transmission losses, supporting high-load corridors across the network.

Key technical features include:

  • Scott-Connected Transformers: Two 100 MVA power transformers deployed for efficient energy distribution

  • Overhead Equipment (OHE) Efficiency: Enhanced load feeding capacity for uninterrupted traction power

  • First-of-its-Kind in India: Scott Transformer Technology applied for railway electrification

The commissioning of this system positions the Nagda traction sub-station as a pioneering hub for next-generation electrification in India, aligning with Indian Railways’ strategy to maximize energy efficiency and reduce operational costs.

Conclusion

From solar-powered innovation in Varanasi to advanced electrification in Madhya Pradesh and new freight corridors in Gujarat, Indian Railways is pushing the boundaries of sustainability, efficiency, and industrial growth. These milestones reflect the organization’s holistic approach to becoming a global leader in green transport solutions while continuing to power India’s economic progress.
