Description
On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, the President of India honoured seven leaders of Operation Sindoor with the prestigious Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal (SYSM), recognising their exceptional contributions to national security and military operations.
About Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal
The Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal was instituted on 26th June 1980 to acknowledge officers who demonstrate outstanding and distinguished service of the highest order during war, conflict, or hostilities. It is regarded as one of India’s most prestigious military honours for operational excellence.
Design and Features
Medal: The SYSM is circular in shape with a diameter of 35 mm and crafted in gold gilt. It is suspended from a plain horizontal bar with standard fittings.
Obverse: The front side bears the State Emblem of India along with the inscription “SARVOTTAM YUDH SEVA MEDAL” in English.
Reverse: The back of the medal displays a five-pointed star symbolising honour and courage.
Ribbon: The medal’s ribbon is golden in colour, featuring a single red vertical stripe at the center, dividing it into two equal parts.
Bars for Multiple Awards: If a recipient is awarded the SYSM more than once, a bar is attached to the ribbon to signify each subsequent award. A miniature insignia representing the bar is added when the ribbon is worn without the medal.

The Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal can be awarded to:
All ranks of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, including Territorial Army units, Auxiliary Forces, Reserve Forces, and other lawfully constituted armed forces when embodied.

The award may also be given posthumously to recognise acts of extraordinary service resulting in loss of life during operations.
