In a significant scientific finding, researchers have documented the rare nocturnal moth species Antitrisuloides catocalina inside the Choolannur Peafowl Sanctuary in Kerala’s Palakkad district. This marks the first-ever record of the species in the Western Ghats, expanding its known geographical distribution.
About Antitrisuloides Catocalina
Antitrisuloides catocalina is a nocturnal moth belonging to the genus Antitrisuloides under the family Noctuidae, one of the largest families of moths worldwide.
Globally, only two species under this genus are known. Until now, the species had been reported only from North-East India.
The specimen discovered in Kerala was subjected to detailed morphological and genetic analysis, which confirmed it as the subspecies Antitrisuloides catocalina cyclica.
Its presence in the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot highlights the rich but still underexplored diversity of moths in the region.
Importance Of Discovery
This discovery provides crucial insights into the ecological connectivity between the Western Ghats and North-East India, two of India’s most prominent biodiversity hotspots.

Choolannur Peafowl Sanctuary: A Haven For Biodiversity
Popularly called Mayiladumpara (“the rock where peacocks dance”), the Choolannur Peafowl Sanctuary is located in Palakkad, Kerala.
Established in 1996, it holds the distinction of being India’s first and only dedicated peacock sanctuary, created primarily for the breeding and conservation of peafowls.
The sanctuary was established in memory of the eminent ornithologist and writer K.K. Neelakantan, popularly known as Induchoodan, who hailed from the nearby village of Kavassery.
Beyond peacocks, the sanctuary supports a variety of flora and fauna, making it an important site for ecological research.
