Description
In August 2025, India marked a historic milestone in marine research when two Indian aquanauts successfully descended to depths of 4,025 metres and 5,002 metres in the Atlantic Ocean. This feat makes India one of fewer than six countries worldwide to explore such extreme depths of the ocean. The mission, carried out in collaboration with France, used the French submersible Nautile and has laid a strong foundation for India’s upcoming Samudrayan Mission, which plans to send the indigenous submersible MATSYA-6000 to 6,000 metres by 2027.
Significant Achievement
The dives are India’s first expeditions beyond 4,000 metres, proving its advancing capabilities in deep-sea science and technology. These missions are expected to expand knowledge of marine ecosystems, assess underwater resource potential, and strengthen India’s role in global ocean research. Beyond scientific outcomes, the success enhances India’s international reputation and aligns with its broader ambition of becoming a leading global economy.
Indo-French Partnership In Ocean Exploration
The expedition was jointly conducted with IFREMER, France’s premier marine research institute. Indian aquanauts boarded the Nautile submersible from the research vessel L’Atalante, stationed near Portugal. The collaboration offered Indian researchers practical training in submersible operations, including piloting, handling of samples, and system management. Such joint efforts not only support knowledge sharing but also encourage stronger international cooperation in ocean sciences.
India’s MATSYA-6000 Submersible
At the centre of India’s deep-sea vision is MATSYA-6000, an indigenously designed human-occupied submersible. Engineered for dives up to 6,000 metres, it has an operational endurance of 12 hours. Key features include a titanium pressure hull, lithium-polymer battery systems, acoustic communications, and built-in emergency safety mechanisms. After completing successful wet trials in early 2025, the submersible is scheduled for shallow water tests up to 500 metres in 2026, followed by deep-sea trials and operational missions between 2027 and 2028.
Strategic Role Of Ocean Resources
With its 7,500 km coastline and vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), India possesses enormous potential in ocean-based resources. Under the Deep Ocean Mission, the country seeks to explore and sustainably utilise these resources. This includes deep-sea mineral mining in zones ranging from 4,000 to 5,500 metres, authorised through agreements with the International Seabed Authority. Additionally, the mission supports services related to climate change impact studies, marine biodiversity, and the expansion of the blue economy.
Looking Ahead: National Vision And Global Leadership
India’s progress in deep-sea exploration complements its growing space achievements, together symbolising the twin engines of future growth. By investing in both space and ocean technologies, the government envisions a stronger global position in resource utilisation, high-end research, and advanced innovation. The Samudrayan Mission and Deep Ocean Mission underline this vision, positioning India not just as a participant but as an emerging global leader in frontier technologies.
