In a significant leap for India’s clean energy ambitions, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has successfully executed the nation’s first auction for Green Ammonia procurement under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This auction, conducted as part of the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Scheme - Mode 2A, resulted in a record-low price discovery of Rupees 55.75 per kg, nearly half of the benchmark from 2024.
Green Ammonia Auction: A Major Boost For Hydrogen Economy
The auction involves an annual supply contract of 75,000 metric tonnes of Green Ammonia to Paradeep Phosphates Limited in Odisha. This is the first among 13 such auctions planned, targeting a total of 7.24 lakh metric tonnes per year.
The discovered price Rupees 55.75/kg or USD 641/MT is notably lower than the Rupees 100.28/kg (USD 1,153/MT) rate from the H2Global auction in 2024. By comparison, Grey Ammonia was priced at USD 515/MT as of March 2025. The new pricing, backed by a 10-year fixed-price agreement, makes Green Ammonia a cost-effective alternative to fossil-derived ammonia for industries.
Investor Response And Institutional Backing
The auction drew enthusiastic participation from energy developers, reflecting strong investor trust in India’s renewable sector. SECI acted as the nodal agency, coordinating closely with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the Department of Fertilizers.
Robust payment security features embedded in the scheme have further strengthened developer confidence, making long-term investments in Green Hydrogen and its derivatives more viable.
Strategic Impact On India’s Green Energy Mission
This development is seen as a turning point in India’s clean fuel transition, reinforcing the idea that Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia can compete with their fossil-fuel-based counterparts. It aligns with the government’s broader goal to position India as a global leader in Green Hydrogen production, especially for sectors like fertilizers, shipping, and heavy industry.
As green fuel production costs near parity with traditional fuels, industries are likely to accelerate their shift towards low-carbon alternatives.

This auction is only the beginning. The upcoming 12 additional tenders are expected to further drive down costs and attract greater global participation. This is a step forward in reducing dependency on imported, fossil-based ammonia and boosting domestic Green Ammonia production capacity.
