About Lalit Kala Akademi
Established on August 5, 1954, the Lalit Kala Akademi was founded by the Government of India as an autonomous institution dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of Indian visual art, both domestically and globally. The Akademi was formally inaugurated by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the then Minister for Education.
In 1957, the Akademi attained the status of a statutory body under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, further empowering it to serve as a national platform for visual arts.
Headquarters: New Delhi
Regional Centres: Chennai, Lucknow, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Garhi
Governance: Operates through a General Council, Executive Board, and various other committees
Funding: Receives financial support from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India
The Akademi plays a vital role in identifying, promoting, and conserving India's visual art heritage, including modern, contemporary, folk, and tribal forms. It maintains a rich permanent collection that captures the diversity and evolution of Indian art practices.
To promote cultural exchange, the Akademi actively engages in international collaborations through Cultural Exchange Programs and Agreements, helping project India’s visual art on the global stage.
National Exhibition Of Art: A Legacy Since 1955
Since its inception in 1955, the National Exhibition of Art has served as the flagship annual event of the Lalit Kala Akademi. It offers a national-level platform for artists to exhibit their creative expressions and innovations in a variety of mediums. The exhibition reflects the artistic progress of the year, showcasing current trends, social themes, and individual artistic voices from all regions of India.
