Description
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated that students in Classes 10 and 12 must achieve at least 75% attendance during the academic year to qualify for the 2026 board examinations. This rule applies to all students unless they fall under certain exceptional categories.
Conditions For Attendance Relaxation
CBSE allows a maximum of 25% relaxation in attendance in exceptional situations such as:
Medical emergencies
Participation in national/international sports events
Other valid and serious circumstances
To avail of this relaxation, students must submit relevant and valid documentation to support their absence.
Instructions For Schools And Students
CBSE has issued clear directions to schools regarding the enforcement of this policy:
Awareness for Students and Parents
Schools must inform students and their parents about the 75% attendance requirement and the consequences of non-compliance. If a student takes leave for medical or personal reasons, they must submit a written leave request with proper documents at the time of taking leave. Absence without prior approval will be treated as unauthorized.
Proper Documentation
For medical reasons, a leave application with authentic medical records must be submitted immediately after the absence.
For other valid reasons, students must inform the school in writing, stating the cause of absence.
Absentees without documented reasons may be labelled as non-attending or dummy candidates.
Attendance Record Maintenance
Schools are required to maintain daily attendance records, which must be signed by the class teacher and the school authority. Any lapse in record-keeping may lead to consequences.
Parental Notification
In cases where a student frequently misses school or is falling short of attendance, schools must notify parents in writing.
Surprise CBSE Inspections
CBSE may carry out unannounced inspections to review attendance records. Inaccurate or incomplete records may result in penalties for the school, including disaffiliation.
No Changes Allowed After Submission
Once schools submit the list of students with attendance shortages, no changes or updates will be accepted by CBSE.
The board has reiterated that consistent attendance is not only essential for exam eligibility but also crucial in nurturing disciplined and responsible students.
