The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has voiced serious concerns over the increasing spread of misleading and inaccurate information about Sikhism through artificial intelligence platforms. In response, the SGPC has appealed to the Union Government to frame a robust policy aimed at curbing such misrepresentations. The committee has also contacted leading AI firms, urging them to take swift measures to safeguard the sanctity of Sikh religious content.
Misrepresentation Of Sikh Teachings Through AI
The SGPC has highlighted alarming cases where AI-generated content distorts sacred Sikh scriptures, particularly Gurbani, as well as historical facts and spiritual principles (Gurmat). Misquoted verses and manipulated visuals have deeply offended the global Sikh community. The SGPC underscored that the Guru Granth Sahib holds supreme religious authority in Sikhism, and any form of alteration or misinterpretation is seen as a violation of its sanctity.
Role And Legacy Of SGPC
Founded in 1920 during the Gurdwara Reform Movement, the SGPC is the primary organisation responsible for managing key Sikh religious institutions, including the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar. Governed by the Sikh Gurdwaras Act of 1925, the SGPC oversees religious observances, educational efforts, and cultural preservation activities. It also plays a central role in publishing and disseminating authentic Sikh literature.

In an effort to counter the issue, the SGPC has officially approached various AI service providers including ChatGPT, Google, and Meta demanding the removal of inaccurate or misleading Sikh content. Calling for decisive government involvement, the SGPC has urged the Union Home Ministry, led by Amit Shah, to address the issue at a national level.
