Union Home Ministry Approved 58,000 Additional CISF Posts For Industrial Growth In LWE-Affected Areas

Description

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sanctioned the recruitment of 58,000 additional personnel for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). This decision is driven by the government's foresight regarding the emergence of new industrial hubs in regions previously impacted by Left Wing Extremism (LWE). The move reflects a strategic focus on bolstering security in upcoming economic zones.

About Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)

The CISF is a Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) functioning under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Headquartered in New Delhi, the CISF plays a critical role in safeguarding India's most vital infrastructure.

  • Motto: Protection and Security

  • Established: 1969 under the CISF Act, 1968

  • Declared Armed Force of the Union: 1983 (through an amendment to the CISF Act)

Initially formed with just three battalions to secure key public sector undertakings (PSUs), the force has since evolved into a robust and multi-functional security agency with over 1.88 lakh personnel.

Structural Overview

The CISF is led by a Director-General from the Indian Police Service (IPS), supported by officers at various command levels. It is organized into seven sectors: Airport, North, North-East, East, West, South, ???????Training Sector

Additionally, the force maintains a dedicated Fire Services Wing for specialized firefighting and emergency response.

Key Functions And Responsibilities

The CISF is entrusted with the protection of critical national infrastructure across a variety of sectors:

  • Nuclear and Space Facilities

  • Airports and Seaports

  • Power Plants

  • Delhi Metro Rail Network

  • Parliament House Complex

  • Heritage Monuments (e.g., Taj Mahal, Red Fort)

  • Central Jails in Jammu & Kashmir

  • Government Buildings and Institutions

Following the 2000 hijacking of IC-814, the CISF was assigned the specialized responsibility of aviation security. Post the 2008 Mumbai attacks, its mandate expanded further to include private corporate establishments.

The force also provides VIP security services, ensuring the safety of high-risk individuals around the clock.

Disaster Response And Public Interface

CISF personnel are trained in disaster management and emergency response, enabling them to act during earthquakes, floods, cyclones, and other natural calamities.

It also stands out as the only CAPF with a dedicated fire safety unit, making it one of India’s largest fire protection forces.

Moreover, CISF is unique for having a daily interface with the public, as seen in:

  • Airport security checks

  • Delhi Metro operations

  • Tourist interactions at iconic monuments

Revenue Model

The CISF operates on a compensatory cost basis, meaning it charges organizations and establishments for the security services rendered. This includes both public sector undertakings and select private enterprises.

Significance Of Expansion

The addition of 58,000 personnel reflects the government's commitment to:

  • Strengthening security in industrial zones emerging in LWE-hit areas

  • Enabling economic development through safe and secure environments

  • Scaling up CISF operations to meet future infrastructure needs across India
