In a groundbreaking step towards clean energy transition and sustainable port operations, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has inaugurated India’s first "Make in India" green hydrogen production facility at Kandla, Gujarat. The 1 MW plant, commissioned in record time, was officially launched by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, marking a historic milestone in India’s green energy roadmap.
A Landmark For Indian Maritime Sector
The newly operational green hydrogen plant is the first of its kind in any Indian port. It is a pilot phase of a much larger vision a 10 MW green hydrogen production project that underscores India's push for self-reliance in renewable technologies. The facility was developed using an indigenously manufactured electrolyzer, making it a flagship example of the ‘Make in India’ initiative and showcasing India’s capability in clean tech innovation.
Clean Mobility At Port Premises
To begin with, the green hydrogen produced at the Kandla plant will be utilized to fuel 11 hydrogen-powered buses and to provide energy for street lighting within the port area. This phase will act as a testing ground for wider adoption. In the coming phases, DPA aims to transition all port-related transport and operations including tugs, cargo vehicles, and service vessels to green hydrogen usage. This move is expected to drastically reduce carbon emissions, creating a benchmark for other ports across the country.
Expansion Plan: 10 MW Green Hydrogen Facility
The current 1 MW setup is only the beginning. By the end of the ongoing fiscal year, an additional 5 MW of capacity is slated to be added. The complete 10 MW facility is expected to be fully functional by mid-next fiscal year. Once operational, the expanded plant will be capable of producing approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which can then be integrated into both port activities and regional supply chains.
Advancing Maritime Decarbonization Goals
The DPA project aligns with India’s commitment under international climate accords and the national vision for net-zero carbon emissions. Green hydrogen produced by electrolysis using renewable electricity is widely seen as the fuel of the future, especially for hard-to-decarbonize sectors like shipping, aviation, and heavy industry. By pioneering this facility, DPA is positioning itself as a leader in maritime decarbonization and sustainable port management in South Asia.
Government Support And Strategic Vision
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26, 2025, during his visit to Bhuj, Gujarat. The government has extended strong support to such initiatives, seeing them as pivotal to India's green energy revolution. Minister Sonowal lauded the DPA for setting a new benchmark in green energy infrastructure, citing their efficiency, scale, and adoption of indigenous technologies as exemplary.
