The Government of India has made a significant leap in healthcare accessibility by extending the Pradhan Mantri National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP) to all 36 States and Union Territories, covering a total of 751 districts. This expansion aims to provide critical support to patients suffering from end-stage renal disease, especially those from economically weaker sections.
Overview Of PM National Dialysis Programme (PMNDP)
Launched in 2016, the PMNDP is a flagship healthcare initiative aimed at delivering free dialysis services to Below Poverty Line (BPL) patients across India. The programme was introduced in response to the rising burden of chronic kidney disease and the increasing need for affordable dialysis services nationwide.
Implementation Mechanism And Delivery Model
The PMNDP is implemented under the National Health Mission (NHM) using a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This model ensures the involvement of private healthcare providers in collaboration with government facilities to enhance service delivery and efficiency.
The programme is currently operational in district hospitals and selected government health facilities, where private partners are responsible for installing and maintaining dialysis machines, hiring trained staff, and managing operations, while the government provides infrastructure and patient access.

Haemodialysis: A machine-based process where blood is filtered through a dialyzer.
Peritoneal Dialysis: A home-based method using the patient's peritoneum in the abdomen as the filtering membrane.
In a recent advancement, the government launched a dedicated PMNDP portal that connects all NHM-supported dialysis centres within a state. This enables the creation of a state-wide renal registry, ensures portability of services for patients within the state ("One State, One Dialysis"), and sets the groundwork for nationwide portability under the "One Nation, One Dialysis" initiative.

Financial assistance for the programme is provided by the National Health Mission (NHM). The NHM supports States and Union Territories in setting up and running dialysis units, including:
