Description

The Matri Van initiative in Gurugram marks a major step toward ecological restoration and urban sustainability. Launched under the Government of India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ programme, this urban forest project seeks to create a lasting green legacy by engaging communities, organisations, and local authorities. Spread across 750 acres of the Aravalli Hills, Matri Van aims to boost biodiversity and improve public well-being in the Delhi NCR region.

Launch Of Initiative

The project was inaugurated during Van Mahotsav 2025 by Union Ministers Bhupender Yadav and Manohar Lal. The Haryana Forest Department led the event with the support of state officials, public representatives, and citizens, including schoolchildren.
The initiative represents a collaborative effort involving government agencies, NGOs, CSR partners, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and the local community.

Vision And Ecological Significance

Matri Van is conceived as a theme-based urban forest, symbolising the nurturing qualities of mother nature. Its primary goal is to restore the Aravalli ecosystem by planting native tree species.

  • The forest is intended to function as the “heart and lungs” of Delhi NCR by improving air quality.

  • It provides a peaceful, green space for health, recreation, and relaxation.

  • The project also supports India’s climate goals by contributing to carbon reduction and promoting sustainable practices.

Tree Plantation And Biodiversity Focus

A key objective of the initiative is to replace invasive species, particularly Kabuli Kikar (Prosopis juliflora), with indigenous trees like Bargad, Peepal, Neem, Dhak, and Aravalli-specific species such as Dhauk and Khairi.
The forest will feature themed groves, including:

  • Bodhi Vatika

  • Bamboo Setum

  • Medicinal Plants Vatika

  • Butterfly Garden

These thematic areas will conserve local flora and support a diverse range of fauna.

Community Engagement And Public Facilities

Matri Van relies on active community involvement through CSR initiatives, NGOs, and RWAs. Planned public amenities include:

  • Nature trails and cycle tracks

  • Yoga spaces and gazebos

  • Water bodies for conservation and to prevent urban flooding

For maintenance, irrigation will rely on treated water, with misting and sprinkling systems to keep the greenery healthy and sustainable.

Alignment With National Environmental Missions

The initiative supports Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), a national campaign promoting:

  • Waste reduction

  • Saving water, energy, and food

  • Banning single-use plastics

  • Encouraging sustainable living practices

It also complements India’s broader effort to increase its renewable energy share, now over 50%, while reducing urban carbon footprints.

Future Impact

With projects like Matri Van, Gurugram is positioning itself as a model ‘Ideal Millennium City’. The urban forest is expected to:

  • Combat pollution

  • Boost biodiversity

  • Provide recreational spaces for residents

By setting an example, Matri Van may inspire other metro cities to launch similar urban greening and ecological restoration projects, paving the way for greener and healthier urban environments across India.
