The Matri Van initiative in Gurugram marks a major step toward ecological restoration and urban sustainability. Launched under the Government of India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ programme, this urban forest project seeks to create a lasting green legacy by engaging communities, organisations, and local authorities. The project was inaugurated during Van Mahotsav 2025 by Union Ministers Bhupender Yadav and Manohar Lal. The Haryana Forest Department led the event with the support of state officials, public representatives, and citizens, including schoolchildren.

A key objective of the initiative is to replace invasive species, particularly Kabuli Kikar (Prosopis juliflora), with indigenous trees like Bargad, Peepal, Neem, Dhak, and Aravalli-specific species such as Dhauk and Khairi.
The forest will feature themed groves, including:

• Bodhi Vatika

• Bamboo Setum

• Medicinal Plants Vatika

• Butterfly Garden

These thematic areas will conserve local flora and support a diverse range of fauna.

Community Engagement And Public Facilities

Matri Van relies on active community involvement through CSR initiatives, NGOs, and RWAs. Planned public amenities include:

• Nature trails and cycle tracks

• Yoga spaces and gazebos

For maintenance, irrigation will rely on treated water, with misting and sprinkling systems to keep the greenery healthy and sustainable.
