Description
The Government of India has introduced the ‘Apna Ghar’ initiative to enhance the safety, health, and well-being of truck drivers undertaking long-distance journeys. This programme provides hygienic, comfortable rest facilities along major highways. As of July 1, 2025, a total of 368 units with more than 4,600 beds have been set up by Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) at their fuel stations nationwide, supporting the trucking community that is vital to India’s supply chain network.
Background And Purpose
Truck drivers often endure poor resting conditions on long trips, leading to fatigue, health problems, and even road safety risks. To address these issues, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas launched the ‘Apna Ghar’ programme. The goal is to create safe, clean, and accessible rest stops for drivers across national and state highways.
Facilities At Apna Ghar Units
Each ‘Apna Ghar’ site offers dormitory-style accommodation with a total of 4,611 beds.
Facilities include clean toilets, designated bathing areas, and purified drinking water.
On-site restaurants or dhabas are available, and some units even have self-cooking spaces for added convenience.
These amenities help drivers rest, refresh, and recover during their long hauls.
Implementation And Coverage
The programme is managed by Public Sector OMCs at fuel retail outlets.
It spans major highways linking key cities and states.
By mid-2025, the network had grown to 368 rest units, giving truck drivers access to better rest options across India.
Technology Integration And Driver Response
A dedicated mobile app allows drivers to locate facilities, book beds, and register online.
The app’s downloads and registrations continue to rise.
Feedback from drivers shows high satisfaction with the comfort and convenience offered by these facilities.
