Description

The Union government has cleared the establishment of PM Ekta Malls in 27 states under the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) initiative. These malls are designed to showcase indigenous products, Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged items, and local handicrafts through permanent retail spaces. For the fiscal year 2023–24, the Centre sanctioned nearly ?4,796 crore for the projects as part of the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) framework, first introduced in the Union Budget 2023–24.

Objective Of PM Ekta Malls

The PM Ekta Malls will serve as dedicated retail platforms for artisans, craftsmen, and small producers.

  • They will display and sell ODOP products and GI-tagged goods.

  • The initiative aims to give greater visibility to regional and traditional crafts in major cities.

  • By directly connecting producers to consumers, the project fosters self-reliance and supports local entrepreneurship.

Implementation And Funding

  • The scheme is being carried out under the Ministry of Finance.

  • States must submit Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the construction of malls.

  • Approvals and funds are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • A total of ?5,000 crore was earmarked for the program, with ?4,796 crore already allocated to 27 states in FY 2023–24.

  • States are required to either provide land free of cost or handle land acquisition expenses.

State-Wise Allocation And Locations

  • Uttar Pradesh: Rupees 370.25 crore for malls in Agra, Lucknow, and Varanasi.

  • Madhya Pradesh: Rupees 284 crore for Ujjain.

  • Assam: Rupees 226 crore for Guwahati.

  • Tamil Nadu: Rupees 223 crore for Chennai.

  • Bihar: Rupees 212.69 crore for Patna.

  • Gujarat and Telangana: Rupees 202 crore each.

  • Maharashtra: Rupees 195.14 crore for Navi Mumbai.

Malls are typically located in state capitals, financial centres, or tourism hubs to ensure maximum visibility.

States Yet To Begin Work

Some regions including West Bengal, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Chandigarh, Ladakh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry have yet to start construction or receive final approvals. These areas are expected to join the scheme later to showcase and market their unique local products.

Impact On Local Economy And Artisans

The PM Ekta Mall initiative is expected to:

  • Boost sales of ODOP and GI-tagged products.

  • Provide direct market access to weavers, artisans, and small producers.

  • Strengthen the cultural identity of each district through the promotion of signature products.

  • Support India’s vision of empowering local craftspeople and promoting entrepreneurship across the country.
