The Bhil community of Mewar in Rajasthan celebrates Gavri, a vibrant 40-day ritual festival of dance, drama, and devotion dedicated to Gorkhiya Mata. For the first time, this centuries-old tradition has been presented to a broader audience through a photo exhibition at the India International Centre Art Gallery, highlighting the community’s oral heritage and cultural richness.
Gavri Festival: Spirit And Meaning
Observed every year after the full moon night of Raksha Bandhan in August, Gavri is a deeply spiritual celebration that honours goddess Parvati, whom the Bhils revere as their sister.
During the festival, Bhil troupes travel across Udaipur and neighbouring districts, performing khels dance-dramas filled with devotional songs, rituals, and moments of trance. These performances invoke Gorkhiya Mata and reaffirm Bhil identity, faith, and unity.
Performance And Social Layers
The Gavri stage becomes a lively, almost carnival-like space, mixing dance, humour, and parody to question social and power hierarchies. No figure of authority whether kings, landlords, or even gods is spared from satire.
Men perform all roles, including female characters, offering rare moments of gender fluidity in an otherwise patriarchal society. For the duration of Gavri, the Bhils are revered as divine beings, a striking reversal from their typical marginalised social status.
Stories Of Nature, Resistance, And Reverence
Through its powerful oral narratives, Gavri preserves Bhil history and worldviews. Performances like ‘Badliya Hindwa’ celebrate their bond with nature, while others, such as ‘Bhilurana’, recount the community’s struggles and defiance against invaders from the Mughals to the British East India Company.
Each performance ends with salutations to the goddess and cautionary messages about protecting the environment and respecting Bhil autonomy, turning Gavri into both cultural celebration and political statement.
