Description

Students educated in India’s age-old gurukul system will now gain access to prestigious research opportunities at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), along with generous scholarships, under the newly launched Setubandha Scholar Scheme. This landmark initiative is designed to bring traditional scholars into the mainstream academic and research ecosystem, recognizing the value of their deep-rooted knowledge in India’s civilisational heritage.

About Setubandha Scholar Scheme

The Setubandha Scholar Scheme is India’s first national-level programme to formally integrate gurukul-trained students into IIT-led research. For centuries, gurukuls have nurtured scholars in disciplines like Sanskrit, philosophy, Ayurveda, and Vedic mathematics, but these students often lacked formal recognition in contemporary education systems.

The scheme now creates an academic “bridge,” enabling scholars from these non-formal backgrounds to contribute meaningfully to cutting-edge research in a modern scientific environment without requiring conventional degrees such as a BA or MA.

Objectives Of Scheme

  • Integrating Traditional and Modern Knowledge: Merging the wisdom of Shastras and classical learning with the rigor of modern science, technology, and research methodologies.

  • Expanding Research Horizons: Encouraging interdisciplinary studies across 18 diverse fields from Ayurveda, philosophy, and cognitive science to architecture, political theory, performing arts, mathematics, and health sciences.

  • Empowering Gurukul Scholars: Creating pathways for recognition, funding, and research opportunities for those with non-traditional educational backgrounds.

Key Features Of Setubandha Scholar Scheme

  • National Recognition for Gurukul Scholars: Provides legitimacy to students who have undergone at least five years of intensive study at a recognised gurukul.

  • Implemented by Leading Institutions: The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Education and executed by the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) division of the Central Sanskrit University (CSU).

  • Generous Financial Support:

    • Category 1 Scholars (Postgraduate Equivalent):

      • Fellowship: Rupees 40,000 per month

      • Annual Research Grant: Rupees 1 lakh

    • Category 2 Scholars (PhD Equivalent):

      • Fellowship: Rupees 65,000 per month

      • Annual Research Grant: Rupees 2 lakh

  • Eligibility Criteria: Minimum of five years of rigorous study in a gurukul. Proven excellence in Shastras or any recognised traditional knowledge field. Applicants must be 32 years of age or younger.

This Scheme Is Significant

The Setubandha Scholar Scheme is not just a funding initiative it is a transformational policy shift.

  • Redefining India’s Education System: By valuing gurukul learning alongside modern academic credentials, the scheme reshapes the definition of scholarship in India.

  • Cultural and Knowledge Revival: Encourages the preservation of traditional disciplines while bringing them into dialogue with modern sciences and global academia.

  • Inclusive Research Ecosystem: Allows scholars rooted in classical learning to participate in elite IIT research, thereby enriching India’s intellectual landscape.

In essence, this initiative forges a strong bridge or ‘setubandha’ between ancient wisdom and contemporary innovation, ensuring that India’s timeless knowledge continues to inform and inspire future generations.
