Description

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the ‘Gyan Bharatam Mission’, a transformative initiative dedicated to the digitisation and preservation of India’s ancient manuscripts. The announcement came during the 124th edition of his Mann Ki Baat address on July 27, 2025, setting the stage for the creation of a National Digital Repository to make India’s civilisational wisdom accessible to students, scholars, and researchers around the world.

About Gyan Bharatam Mission

The Gyan Bharatam Mission is a nationwide effort to safeguard and digitise over one crore ancient manuscripts housed in libraries, temples, and private collections across the country. Describing these manuscripts as the “Chapters of India’s Soul,” PM Modi highlighted their enduring significance in understanding India’s spiritual, cultural, and philosophical traditions.

Key Objectives Of Mission

  • Digitisation of Rare Manuscripts: Preserving fragile, handwritten texts by converting them into secure digital formats.

  • Creation of a National Digital Repository: A central platform to house and share digitised manuscripts for global access.

  • Enhancing Knowledge Accessibility: Providing scholars, educators, and students a treasure trove of India’s traditional wisdom.

  • Preserving Cultural Legacy: Ensuring future generations remain connected to India’s ancient intellectual and cultural heritage.

Budgetary Support And Expansion

Initially announced in the Union Budget 2025, the mission has seen a massive funding boost from Rupees 3.5 crore to Rupees 60 crore. This increased allocation reflects the government’s commitment to protecting India’s knowledge heritage and ensuring these texts are preserved for centuries to come.

Civilisational Significance

PM Modi stressed that these manuscripts are not just old writings, but repositories of India’s civilisational consciousness. He called upon citizens to support and participate in this mission, framing it as an integral part of ‘Viksit Bharat’ a vision to blend modernity with the revival of traditional knowledge systems.

UNESCO Recognition Of Maratha Forts

In the same address, PM Modi also hailed UNESCO’s inclusion of 12 Maratha forts in the World Heritage Sites list. Eleven of these forts are in Maharashtra, with one in Tamil Nadu. Calling them “pages of history carved in stone,” he underlined how these forts embody India’s resilience, architectural brilliance, and cultural pride.
