The 2025 State of Food and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report reveals that 720 million people worldwide suffered from hunger in 2024, representing 8.2% of the global population. While this marks a marginal improvement from recent years, the report warns that progress remains uneven across regions, making it challenging to achieve the UN’s Zero Hunger goal by 2030.
Global Hunger Trends
The number of chronically undernourished people dropped slightly from 8.5% in 2023 and 8.7% in 2022, yet hunger levels remain higher than pre?pandemic figures and those recorded in 2015, when the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were introduced. Compared to 2015, there are now 96 million more people facing chronic hunger.
Regional Distribution Of Hunger
Asia continues to have the largest share of the undernourished with 323 million people affected.
Africa follows with 307 million people, and has the highest prevalence, with over 20% of its population chronically hungry.
Latin America and the Caribbean account for 34 million undernourished individuals.
While parts of Southeast Asia, South Asia, and South America have seen declines in hunger, many African regions continue to struggle with persistent or worsening food insecurity.
Food Insecurity Levels
The report estimates that 2.3 billion people faced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2024. Nearly half of these individuals live in Asia, though the intensity of food insecurity is greatest in Africa.
Projections For 2030
By 2030, the SOFI report projects that 512 million people will still be undernourished only a slight improvement from 577 million in 2015.
Africa is expected to account for 60% of the global undernourished population, with 17.6% of its people likely to face chronic hunger.
Asia and Latin America, in contrast, are forecast to reduce undernourishment rates to below 5%.
Key Factors Impacting Food Security
The findings consider variables such as demographics, agricultural productivity, and macroeconomic conditions. Persistent issues like conflict, climate change, economic instability, and unequal food distribution continue to hamper efforts to end hunger and malnutrition.
Role Of UN Agencies In Addressing Hunger
The SOFI report is jointly prepared by five UN agencies FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP, and WHO. It serves as a key monitoring tool for SDG 2, which seeks to eliminate hunger and malnutrition by 2030, offering data, insights, and policy recommendations to strengthen food security and nutrition efforts globally.
