Description

Researchers have uncovered two previously unknown bush frog species in Meghalaya’s Khasi Hills, further highlighting the state’s extraordinary biodiversity. The newly identified species Raorchestes jadoh and Raorchestes jakoid celebrate Khasi culture through their names, showcasing the close connection between the local community and its natural surroundings.

Discovery And Cultural Naming

The frogs were discovered in two different locations Raorchestes jadoh in Langtor village and Raorchestes jakoid in Lawbah.

  • Raorchestes jadoh is named after ‘jadoh,’ a popular Khasi rice and meat delicacy.

  • Raorchestes jakoid derives its name from ‘jakoid,’ the Khasi word for frog.

These names were chosen to honour local traditions and strengthen awareness of the relationship between culture and biodiversity.

Habitat And Adaptation

The new species were found inhabiting bushes and trees near human settlements, suggesting they can adjust to changing environments. However, the fragile landscapes they live in face increasing threats from development and habitat alteration. Their proximity to villages signals both ecological flexibility and the urgent need for conservation measures.

Research Techniques And Confirmation

To validate the discoveries, scientists combined on-ground field surveys with genetic testing and acoustic analysis. Unique calls, distinct physical traits, and DNA sequencing confirmed the frogs as entirely new species. Both belong to the Raorchestes parvulus complex, a genus known for its diversity across South and Southeast Asia.

Why This Discovery Matters

Meghalaya is part of the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, home to an impressive array of amphibians around 70 species are already documented in the state. Remarkably, 20 new amphibian species have been identified in Meghalaya since 2000, underscoring the region’s global ecological significance and the importance of continued herpetological research.

Cultural Pride And Conservation Call

Lead researcher Holiness Warjri, a resident of Langtor, expressed pride in naming one of the species after a dish that represents family bonds in Khasi culture. By weaving local heritage into scientific naming, the team hopes to motivate communities to engage in conservation efforts.

This discovery not only expands scientific understanding but also celebrates the symbiotic relationship between Khasi traditions and the rich natural world of Meghalaya.
