ZSI Scientists Discover Piratula acuminata: First Record of the Genus in India

Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Kolkata have identified a new spider species on Sagar Island in the Sundarbans, marking the first documented presence of the genus Piratula in India. The species, named Piratula acuminata, belongs to the Lycosidae family, commonly called wolf spiders, and highlights the rich yet largely unexplored biodiversity of the UNESCO-listed Sundarbans.

Discovery And Identification

The discovery was made during intensive field surveys on Sagar Island, the largest in the Sundarbans delta. The spider is medium-sized, measuring 8–10 millimetres in length, with a creamy-white body, brown and chalk-white abdominal markings, and two light brown stripes at the rear. Scientists confirmed the species through detailed morphological analysis, examining unique features like the acuminate basal arm of the tegular apophysis in males and ovate spermathecae in females.

Piratula acuminata is part of the wolf spider family (Lycosidae), known for their active hunting behaviour rather than web-building. Wolf spiders are ground-dwelling predators that ambush prey instead of trapping them. The Piratula genus is distributed across various parts of Asia but had never been recorded in India before this find, making the discovery a milestone in Indian arachnology.
