Description
Recent scientific efforts have led to the identification and classification of two previously unknown species of wart sea slugs in the marine ecosystems off North Sulawesi, Indonesia. These newly described species, Phyllidia ovata and Phyllidia fontjei, contribute to the growing knowledge of Indo-Pacific marine biodiversity. Their discovery underscores the value of citizen science and international scientific partnerships.
Discovery And Documentation
A group of five women researchers from Germany, Indonesia, and Wales collaborated to identify the new species. The identification of Phyllidia ovata was based on 23 years of underwater imagery from various countries, including Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia. In contrast, Phyllidia fontjei a smaller and less frequently observed species was mainly documented in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Andaman Sea. Both slugs belong to the Phyllidiidae family, recognized for their striking coloration and chemical defences obtained from consuming sponges.
About Phyllidia ovata
This medium-sized sea slug, reaching up to 5 cm in length, has a distinct oval body shape, which inspired its name. Though often encountered and photographed by divers, it was officially classified only after detailed analysis of samples from North Sulawesi. Its vivid appearance and specific physical features differentiate it from other wart sea slugs.
About Phyllidia fontjei
Much smaller in size, Phyllidia fontjei grows to just 16 mm. Named in honour of Indonesian scientist Dr. Fontje Kaligis for his contributions to marine research, the species was described from a single specimen (holotype) that underwent comprehensive anatomical study. It is more prevalent in the Andaman Sea but also found in other parts of Southeast Asia.

Amateur marine enthusiasts played a crucial role in these discoveries. Their contributions via platforms like iNaturalist, Facebook, and sea slug-focused online forums provided critical photographic records and sighting data. These user-generated resources allowed scientists to identify and trace species distribution even in the absence of physical samples.
