In July 2025, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the Gorbea Solar Power Project in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district. With an installed capacity of 435 MW, this large-scale solar plant was completed in under eight months, symbolising a significant achievement in India’s renewable energy journey. It is expected to supply clean electricity to 1.28 lakh households while helping to cut down carbon emissions by approximately 7.05 lakh tonnes annually, contributing to the country’s climate and energy goals.

Project Details And Operations

Spanning 1,250 acres, the project operates under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). It employs advanced Topcon Bifacial Mono PERC solar panels, which can absorb sunlight from both sides, thereby increasing energy output. To ensure the system runs at peak efficiency, over 1,300 robotic units are deployed to clean and maintain the panels regularly.

Rajasthan’s Renewable Energy Landscape

Rajasthan is a national leader in clean energy production, with around 70% of its electricity now derived from renewable sources. The state's total renewable installed capacity stands at 35.4 GW, with solar contributing 29.5 GW and wind energy accounting for 5.2 GW. Rajasthan has adopted progressive energy policies such as the Integrated Clean Energy Policy and the Green Hydrogen Policy (2024) to encourage sustainable energy development and attract investments.

Environmental And Economic Benefits

The Gorbea plant is projected to generate 755 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually. This not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also curtails environmental pollution. The project promotes local job creation and enhances income for nearby farmers by enabling land leasing. It aligns with India’s pledge to achieve 50% non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030, potentially ahead of schedule.

Minister Joshi highlighted the need to invest in emerging technologies like perovskite tandem solar cells, which are known for their higher energy conversion efficiency. Pilot initiatives for such innovations are being encouraged in sun-rich states like Rajasthan, which also boasts a vast untapped wind energy potential of 284 GW ideal for hybrid solar-wind power projects.

Government Schemes And Sectoral Investments

Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar scheme, Rajasthan has deployed over 49,000 rooftop solar systems, with subsidies worth more than ?325 crore disbursed. Additionally, under the PM-KUSUM scheme, the state has operationalised over 1.45 lakh solar agricultural pumps. Investment proposals worth Rupees 6.57 lakh crore primarily in renewable energy and green hydrogen have been received. However, a backlog of rooftop solar applications points to the need for faster implementation.
