In Brazil, about 9.1 million hectares of their land remain legally unrecognized.
Colombia has around 1.76 million hectares without formal titles.
In Suriname, over 10.5 million hectares of Indigenous and Afro-descendant lands lack official recognition.
This legal uncertainty puts both their livelihoods and the forests they protect at risk.
Need For Policy Support And Investment
Experts are calling on national governments to formally recognise Afro-descendant territories to reinforce forest protection efforts. There is also a pressing need for increased financial support, technical assistance, and policy integration to strengthen their traditional land management systems. Recognizing and funding their contributions could lead to more inclusive and effective global strategies for climate mitigation and biodiversity conservation.
