Description
In a significant development for India’s maritime environmental security, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) commissioned Samudra Prachet, the second and final indigenous Pollution Control Vessel (PCV), on July 23, 2025. The launch took place at Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), reinforcing India’s capabilities in managing marine pollution and advancing the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative through locally developed maritime technology.
Context And Development
The need for specialised vessels to manage marine pollution has intensified with increasing maritime traffic and industrial activity in the Indian Ocean Region. Recognising this, the Ministry of Defence approved the construction of two Pollution Control Vessels by GSL, a leading defence public sector enterprise. The first of these ships was launched in August 2024, and Samudra Prachet now completes the duo aimed at enhancing India's coastal pollution control measures.
Strategic Importance
The addition of Samudra Prachet marks a significant step in India's maritime defence and environmental strategy. It enhances the Indian Coast Guard’s capability to respond promptly to oil spills and other marine ecological threats within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This aligns with India’s commitments under the Maritime Zones of India Act, 1981, and global conventions such as MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships).
