Description

The Ministry of Tourism has recently unveiled the operational guidelines for the SASCI Scheme, a strategic initiative aimed at transforming select iconic tourist destinations in India into world-class attractions. This scheme forms part of the Government’s broader vision to strengthen India's tourism infrastructure, enhance visitor experience, and position the country as a global tourism hub.

About SASCI Scheme

The Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale (SASCI) is a centrally driven scheme designed to support State Governments in the comprehensive development of iconic tourist spots across India. The scheme focuses not only on infrastructure enhancement but also on branding, promotion, and global positioning of these destinations.

The core goal is to provide end-to-end support from conceptualization to sustainable operations while ensuring these centres offer immersive, high-quality experiences to both domestic and international tourists.

Key Features Of SASCI Scheme

  • Holistic Tourism Development - The scheme is not limited to physical infrastructure. It seeks to enrich the entire tourism value chain including site accessibility, facilities, digital presence, and environmental sustainability.

  • Financial Assistance - The Union Government will provide financial support to State Governments based on project proposals. Funding will continue up to 31st March 2026, allowing sufficient time for project execution.

  • Project Selection and Parameters - Iconic sites are selected based on detailed proposals submitted by State Governments. Each proposal is evaluated against a comprehensive set of parameters, such as: Accessibility and connectivity existing tourism ecosystem environmental sustainability and carrying capacity projected impact and long-term value generation detailed marketing and branding strategies sustainable management and operational plans

  • Implementation Timeline - Projects sanctioned under the SASCI scheme must be completed within a maximum of two years, and the responsibility for execution and maintenance lies with the respective State Governments.

  • Expert-Driven Development - The scheme encourages the involvement of domain experts and skilled professionals in areas such as design, architecture, environmental planning, and heritage management to ensure international standards are met.

Strategic Importance

SASCI is part of India’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable tourism and leverage cultural and natural heritage as economic and social assets. By developing globally competitive tourist destinations, the scheme is expected to:

  • Generate employment opportunities at the local level

  • Boost regional economies

  • Enhance India’s soft power through cultural promotion

  • Increase tourist footfall, both domestic and international

Conclusion

With the release of operational guidelines, the SASCI scheme is now in motion to transform India's tourism landscape. By equipping State Governments with funding and strategic direction, the initiative promises to deliver a globally competitive tourism experience while maintaining the integrity and sustainability of India's iconic sites.
